History

The origins of the Albury Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen's Club may be traced back 50 years to the Albury and District War Services Hall Appeal Committee. This group of the World War I diggers, service groups and parents of men serving in World War II set out to raise 14,000 pounds for a Services Memorial Hall.Laying the Foundation Stone

After the war ended, the Memorial Hall Fund was far short of its target. Also, different attitudes prevailed when the boys came home. Instead of a memorial hall, the idea of a licensed club gained favour. This was to be not merely for RSL men who had served overseas, but for many ex-servicemen who had not left Australia.

Using the Memorial Hall Fund, the RSL bought the old Commercial Club buildings at 611 Dean Street, which had been a Service Rest Room throughout the war and up to February 1946. The SS&A Club was formally opened in October 1946 and was registered under the Liquor Act in 1947.

In 1990, $5.7 Millon was spent on major upgrades to the Club. These provided for a 300 seat bistro and coffee lounge, new gaming machine lounge, the David Street foyer with it's canopy entrance and extentions to the sports lounge. The upstairs kitchens were also enlarged.

In 2004 a series of major renovations took place, which involved the reconstruction of the Olive Street foyer, the Auditorium and the David Street foyer, as well as a facelift to the Bistro.

In 2005 The Oasis Courtyard was completed, replacing the old bowling greens. The Oasis, as it was aptly named, comprises of an outdoor garden area, opening onto the waterfall feature, surrounded by an 80 seat terraced area, childrens playground and games room and purpose built cafe.

In 2006, The Albury SS&A Club officially merged with the Wodonga Country Club, creating a unique, and historic cross-border relationship. With the financial backing of The Albury SS&A Club, the existing clubhouse was completely renovated in 2007, adding new dining, gaming and leisure facilities to cater for members and guests alike.

With the advent of complete smoking bans in all pubs and clubs in NSW in 2007, The Albury SS&A Club undertook major internal renovations to create 'The Atrium' - a dedicated area for smokers, that brings the outdoors, indoors.
